Students, staff and guest speakers recently attended the CDT-ACM Summer Retreat in Girona, Spain. The retreat was held at the Eden Roc Hotel in Girona from 16-19 July 2019. Three days of talks were organised alongside group activities where students were asked to devise either an outreach activity, or a course module addressing professional development, public engagement or ‘unlocking academia’. Students then pitched the idea and a strategy for delivering the proposal to CDT staff and students.

Guest speakers included Chris Nicklin from Diamond Light Source, Professor Eleanor Schofield, Head of Conservation & Collections Care at the Mary Rose Trust, Alex Martinez from Johnson Matthey Technology Centre and Professor Rik Drummond Brydson from the University of Leeds

Students gave seminars and presented posters on their research and also participated in panel discussions on industrial placements and discrimination in the workplace.

Prizes were awarded to students Jennifer Hack, Troy Dion, Horatio Cox, Elena Watts and Caoimhe Joyce for best presentation and posters.

Overall it was a very successful and enjoyable retreat!

I really enjoyed my time as a member of the CDT-ACM. It provided the opportunity to gain experience with a wide range of materials characterisation techniques and to engage with the wider research community by participating in conferences and Outreach events.
